Well the boy is a superstar. He is such a brave little man already and I think surprised everyone with how well he coped with all the poking and prodding with hardly a murmur.
The antibiotics certainly did the trick really quickly, he was due to have the last iv dose this morning and then be discharged but the line blew out right at the start. Because he was already so much better, and they didn’t want to have to put another one in his head if they could help it, they decided it wasn’t worth it and let us leave this afternoon with liquid antibiotics for the next few days. He was such a good boy when they took the line out of his head, it was all taped into his hair so the nurse warned it would hurt but all he did was keep his eyes on mine, frown a little and suck furiously on his dummy – brilliant!
It looks like he does have the floppy airway thing (tracheomalacia), but there’s not really much treatment for it, unless things get really serious, and they grow out of it by about age 2. It is linked with a lot of the issues that we have had so far including reflux, feeding issues (which is still a big struggle despite the tongue clip), poor weight gain and he has a number of the other symptoms too – things that we thought were just little quirks or were told were nothing to worry about. It seems that it has probably got a bit worse in the last week or two as he’s put on so much weight so quickly and there’s more pressure on his trachea. They did some monitoring of his respiratory rates etc while he was in hospital and although his oxygen levels do dip reasonably frequently, they always jump right back up within a second so it’s nothing too concerning apparently. We’ve been told to watch out for worsening of some of his symptoms, especially his stridor breathing and tracheal tugs, and when to go to the doctor but it’s expected to just remain a mild issue that he will grow out of in time.
For now we are happy to have our gorgeous boy home again and he’s full of smiles! K is having a well deserved soak in a nice hot bath to wash all the hospital off her, and I am enjoying have snuggles on the couch with my best boy. Bliss!
